North Africa's international gas connections to Europe are familiar: the existing Transmed and Maghreb-Europe pipelines, the Medgaz line to Spain opening later this year, and the Galsi venture to Sardinia and mainland Italy for start-up in 2012-13.Less well-known are plans to tie in new gas discoveries deep inside not just Algeria but also Tunisia, allowing supplies for local and export markets to be maintained or increased longer term. Schemes also exist to extend the Arab Gas Pipeline (AGP) to bring Egyptian or even Iraqi gas to Turkey and Europe, or conversely, to bring Iraqi gas to Egyptian LNG export plants.
