After years of debate and environmental studies, Sweden and Finland on the same day last week gave the Gazprom-led Nord Stream project permission to lay pipe in their waters. However, some observers doubt that the additional gas volumes to be pumped through the 1,223 kilometer line directly under the Baltic Sea to Germany are actually needed, given faltering European gas demand.
