Gas demand is down all over (p8). But in southern Europe the recession-related contraction has been particularly sharp after almost a decade of expansion, as reduced electricity demand sends gas use by generators into a tailspin. Signs are emerging, too, that pipelines from Algeria are being completed or repaired more slowly than expected amid starkly lower flows through existing lines to Europe.
