Much is at stake for the US gas industry this autumn as lawmakers in Washington hit "crunch time" for working out the details of a 2009 energy bill, not to mention climate change legislation (p4). And an issue on which House and Senate leaders can't dawdle is President Barack Obama's proposed 2010 federal budget, which would eliminate eight existing tax deductions for oil and gas production and levy a new excise tax on offshore development in the Gulf of Mexico.
