Five of the EU's largest natural gas consumers are lashing out at European Commission plans to create new rules to guarantee gas supplies in an emergency. The draft law, originally presented in February, would make it compulsory for countries to redirect gas to a neighboring member state suffering extreme fuel shortages. It's part of a grander program to enhance security and minimize supply disruptions within the 28-member bloc envisaged as part of the so-called Energy Union, created in response to an energy crisis in parts of the EU in 2009, after Russia cut gas supply to transit state Ukraine, and the threat of similar disruptions in 2014.
