The bosses of eight leading oil and gas producers will meet in Paris on Oct. 16 in an attempt to firm up proposals for a global carbon pricing system they hope will boost use of gas at coal's expense. It's part of a belated effort by the industry to insert itself more forcefully in the climate debate ahead of crunch UN climate talks in Paris this December (p10). If a strong global accord can be forged in the French capital, expectations are that carbon pricing — taxes, EU-style cap-and-trade or some combination — will expand.
