With key UN climate talks in Paris less than six months away, Australia faces intense international scrutiny over what it will bring to the table in the French capital. Climate negotiators have aligned behind a strategy of inviting countries to design their own commitments for emissions cuts after 2020 — as if to say, "We don't care what route is taken, as long as you do something." Australia's independent Climate Change Authority — which provides input to the government's climate change task force — has recommended a target of 30% below 2000 levels in 2025, and 40%-60% below by 2030, but its proposals have gone unheeded before. And beyond stating it plans to unveil its chosen target soon, Canberra has so far said little.
