Abnormally cold weather across parts of Iran earlier this month exacerbated preexisting gas shortages to the extent that many factories, petrochemical plants and compressed natural gas (CNG) stations were forced to close for lack of feedstock as the government made gas supply to households a priority. President Hassan Rohani says extra fuel oil has been sent to power stations to help them meet higher electricity demand, but nearly half a million homes suffered power outages when meters of snow blanketed parts of the country in the first week of February.
