Iran cold front highlights gas shortage

Heavy snow and cold weather that hit northern Iran this week has laid bare the country’s gas deficit.Many parts of northern Iran experienced gas cuts or a steep drop in gas pressure as household demand shot up.Iran transports its gas more than 1,500km from its fields in the south to population centres in the north.The country consumes about 160bn m3/yr of gas,closely matching its production.But it faces a 40bn m3/ yr gas deficit during periods of peak demand(WPA,3 January,p3).
