Qatar's Stubborn Price Stand

Not particularly desperate for more gas, Qatar is taking a hard line against international firms that recently made landmark offshore gas finds. Germany's Wintershall and France's GDF Suez are struggling to find ways to commercialize discoveries at the existing offtake price of $4 per million Btu, which they say makes development barely economic. But state-owned Qatar Petroleum (QP) insists it would rather leave the gas in the ground than pay more, Qatari officials say.
