With Russia threatening to cut off gas supply to Ukraine unless it pays for June deliveries in advance — and the consequent threat to transit shipments to Europe — EU policymakers are looking at ways to diversify supply with the aim of presenting comprehensive proposals next month. Meeting in Rome last week to discuss means of strengthening collective energy security, G7 energy ministers said that promoting LNG and opening new supply routes such as the Southern Corridor could be part of the solution, while a European Commission spokesman said Brussels will also explore the possibility of hoisting gas imports from existing suppliers, including North Africa (WGI Apr.30' 14).
