British Columbia Hits LNG Pedal

If British Columbia wants to transform its nascent LNG export industry into the next big North American energy phenomenon, the provincial government needs public support at home, as well as strong financial backing from Asia. Premier Christy Clark believes she took care of the first requirement when she defied the pundits to win British Columbian elections in May, partly by using the possibility of an LNG-based bonanza as a stick to beat her rival, left-leaning Adrian Dix of the New Democratic Party (WGI May22'13). Clark, a right-leaning Liberal, is now using some carrots — ＄1 trillion in GDP creation by 2046, 100,000 jobs, and erasing the province's $60 billion debt — to win over the people of British Columbia, often seen as more inclined to support environmental causes than their neighbors in oil sands-rich Alberta.
