The British Geological Survey (BGS) recently provided a midpoint assessment of shale gas-in-place (GIP) resources across northern England — the so-called Bowland-Hodder study area — of 1,239 trillion cubic feet (37.6 trillion cubic meters). This is more than double the maximum GIP figures so far released by UK-based Cuadrilla, IGas, Dart and Aurora of 200 Tcf, 172.3 Tcf, 117 Tcf and 50 Tcf for their respective licenses in the region. BGS emphasized the "resource" figure equates to the total volume of shale gas, not to how much can be recovered, for which it is maintaining its 2010 rough "reserve" estimate of 5.3 Tcf for the entire UK, including 4.7 Tcf for northern England.
