Toyota, EDF to develop plug-in hybrids in Europe

Toyota Motor Corp. is pushing ahead with a tie-up to develop plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles in Europe with French energy company EDF. Tests have begun in France on vehicles equipped with Toyota's hybrid technology that combines a gasoline engine with an electric battery-driven motor that can be charged at public charging stations. PHEVs are no novelty in the U.S., where a number of auto makers are working on developing the technology and at least three - including Toyota - are planning domestic introductions in 2010.
