AS I WRITE THIS, we are in the middle of the national playoffs for basketball and ice hockey. Commentators keep emphasizing the importance to a team's ultimate success ofretaining home-field advantage.A similar concept should apply to the produce industry. The industry likes to trumpet its export successes. However, its ability to defend its home markets should be an equally significant indicator of its global competitiveness. A look at the data for U.S. imports of major fresh fruits and vegetables between 2000 and 2014 should be a cause for concern.
