NUTRIENT management is a challenging aspect of organic farming. Organic forms of nutrients are released slowly over time, making nutrient management a balancing act for growers. So how do organic growers manage their fertility inputs, with the uncertainty around time of nutrient release compared to plant need for uptake? Many researchers are working on this question. Soil ecologist Laurie Drink-water at Cornell University has been working with organic growers and other researchers in the Northeast to develop a nutrient budgeting tool so that organic farmers can easily determine the nutrient content of their inputs and outputs, and calculate nutrient availability.
