Currently, economic sustainability is the primary dimension of sustainable aquaculture because producers need wealth to improve environmental and social sustainability (EC 2005). Economic sustainability relies on well planned and profitable projects, which generate enough earnings to retain farmers in the activity. However, to be profitable any aquaculture industry depends not only on good results in the rearing the animals or plants, but also on a whole set of linked elements, constituting a complex web. This is called the production chain, which includes the farm and all stages of producing, distributing and commercializing the product until it reaches final consumption. Therefore, the production chain presents multidisciplinary characteristics. Each element is essential and the industry's strength or weakness is based on the strength of its weakest element.
