The need for diversification in aquaculture has led to a marked increase in the number of studies focusing on new species. Selecting and studying new species suitable for aquaculture is pivotal for the successful and rapid development of the industryand adds the flexibility to respond to changes in demand and consumer preferences. This is the case in South Africa, where abalone farming helped diversify the industry.
