Call for state action on crane safety

At a time when unions are using crane safety issues as the reason for industrial action, a paper released by the Cole Royal Commission into the Building and Construction Industry has identified the need for "truly independent" authorities with the expertise to control crane safety issues. The fact that safety authorities in the different states have lost the specialist expertise on cranes and lifts has been blamed by sections of the industry for enabling unions to use specious safety issues to achieve their industrial relations objectives on building and construction sites.
