Approximately 20 years ago, by accident, I discovered a typed manuscript in the archives of the Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society at Easton, Pennsylvania. The author, Dr: Charles Stewart, (1830-1917), lived in Easton all his life. From the viewpoint of business history, this essay allows a close look at the operation of a profitable, privately owned, water-powered rod and wire factory during a period when American manufacturing was in its infancy. The author was a well-educated person with a keen eye for practical solutions to everyday mill problems.
