The INMET Metal Processing Plant of the Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals in Gliwice, Poland, is one of the main Polish producers of wires from silver and silver alloys as well as silver-based and copper-based hard solders. It is the only producer of soldering alloys in Poland. The material costs in the price of finished wires varies from about 37 percent for copper-based wires to about 84.5 percent for wires made from pure silver. For that reason, the level of yields and irrecoverable losses in the fabrication process is of particular importance for the profitability of production. The technology used to produce these materials should, therefore, ensure the most advantageous technological indices and high quality of the final products. Taking all these factors into account, an experimental production line for the continuous horizontal casting of wires and strips from silver, silver alloys and copper alloys was built and started at INMET in 1997-1998 in cooperation with the Ingenieur-Buero Stranggiessanlagen & Sondermachienen (Germany).~(1-8) The line consists of the following equipment:
