This approach offers a new and realistic way to meet non-contact measurement needs.For many years there has been a variety of dimensional measurement systems employed in the wire and cable industry for the measurement of the most common dimension: the average outside diameter of round products. This was accomplished first with single-plane dimensional gauges, principally of laser design, and more commonly today with dual-plane gauges for a more accurate measurement of average diameter and ovality. In the production of profiles, these same gauges have been adapted to the manufacturing environment for the limited measurement of selected dimensions, i.e., height and width, where appropriate. Strategies to rotate single and multiple gauges about the profile have been used in an attempt to derive more complete measurement data of fairly standard shapes including squares, rectangles and hexagons. Until recently, no measurement scheme had been developed for the practical in-line non-contact, continuous measurement of more complex geometries.
