The primary purpose of Geological and Geotechnical investigations for Water Resources projects - for harnessing hydro potential of the rivers - is to provide the information that design engineers require in order to design safe engineering structureslike dam, spillways, tunnels, power-houses etc. and to be able to estimate with reasonable accuracy how much these structures are going to cost. The aim of the designers is to build the structures for the lowest cost consistent with currently acceptablestandards of safety. The safety and cost of the super structures built to harness water resources are dependent on the methodology and techniques used in site selection, design and construction. Large dam projects are highly individual in their geological setting, design and construction materials used to build them.
