Welded structures replaced riveted structures made of 1420 aluminium-lithium alloy for the first time in the construction of Mig-29M aircraft~(1'2). Components of the fuselage structure (pilot cabin, fuel tanks) were produced from semi-finished products made from the 1420 alloy of the Al-Mg-Li-Zr system. Consequently, the weight of the fuselage was reduced by 24% in comparison with that of the riveted structures made from D16chT alloy as a result of a lower (by 10%) density of the 1420 alloy (p = 2.47 g/cm~3) and the removal of laps, sealants, riveted and bolted joints.
