Space scientists breakthrough on biofuel algae

NASA'S SCIENTISTS have developed a new method for the production of algae using an existing technology designed for the inexpensive treatment of sewage on long space missions. Called 'offshore membrane enclosures for growing algae' (OMEGA), the process involves placing algae in sewage-filled plastic bags and floating them out to sea as the oil-producing organisms multiply. The algae feast on nutrients in the. sewage and in turn produce lipids - fat-soluble molecules - which are used as fuel.
