Aluminium alloy was subjected to Nd: YAG laser welding under various laser irradiation conditions including by twin spot beams; the energy absorptivity during welding was measured; the results may be summarised as follows. When compared by the output, a single spot beam showed a higher energy absorptivity; however, the twin spot beams also became saturated at a value of approximately 80 percent in the high output region of approximately 5 kW and there was little difference to be noted. The relationship between the laser irradiation conditions and the energy absorptivity was observed to be a good consistency with the Gouffe-Dausinger model by redefining the beam diameter value for twin beams so that the keyhole opening sizes could be represented.
