SIZE ISN'T EVERYTHING when it comes to engines, and the Polo's is proof of that. It uses a 1.2-litre petrol unit, whereas its rivals in this test all have 1.6-litre engines. However, Volkswagen makes up for this smaller capacity by fitting a turbocharger. The Polo's 104bhp power output isn't going to win many hands of Top Trumps, but its engine develops the most torque and delivers it at lower revs. That means, whatever your speed, a small prod of the throttle is all that's needed to send the Polo surging forward, and you rarely need to shift down more than one gear for swift overtaking manoeuvres.
