IT'S FUNNY HOW your opinion of something changes over time. After my first couple of weeks with the Mercedes C-Class Estate, I reckoned that its brightest star was the three-pointed one on the bonnet. After a couple of months, though, I realised that the Merc had real star quality I wasn't the first person to appreciate the Mercedes' talents, however. The original keeper was former deputy web editor Jim Holder, so I had him to thank for choosing the C-Class Estate in its sweetest guise: with the more powerful of the two 2.1-litre diesel engines and in entry-level SE spec. The engine promised the best balance between performance and running costs, while SE trim kept the price to an acceptable level.
