ONE OF NISSAN'S priorities with the second-generation X-Trail was to give it a more-upmarket feel -which it did. However, for many of its target buyers, the addition of an automatic diesel to the range will be just as important as the extra kit and fancy soft-touch plastics. This six-speed automatic model is expected to account for a quarter of all X-Trail sales, and with good reason. Shifts are smooth, whether you leave the 'box to get on with things or override it by nudging the lever back and forth, and it doesn't kick down at inconvenient times, such as in the middle of bends.
