An investment in new housing has resulted in a 40 percent improvement in growth rate among finishing pigs on a Devonshire farm. And it has transformed the work routine of the husband and wife team who own and manage the unit. Being locked up by movement restrictions during the 2007 foot-and-mouth outbreak prompted Jeremy and Jennifer Brown to put up two new finishing houses holding 1,800 pigs on their Vinnicombe Farm, Politmore, near Exeter, where they run a 300-sow herd. This was followed by a 1440-place weaner house.
