If everyone in the industry works at it, prices will rise. Pundits are agreed. The era of cheap food is over. European pig prices will rise to cover increased feed costs. Even in Britain - where Asda is attempting to lead a charge downwards in the price of pork - prices will improve in the next few months. They will be driven upwards by intense pressure from the British pig industry and by big players on the continent; companies such as Smithfield will not let their empires fall into ruin for the want of another 12p a kilo. Similar pressure will come from poultry and beef producers.
