The last pig to be bought onto the Lamden Estate pig unit, near Coldstream in the Borders, was in 1959, a Landrace boar. Since then, until the last couple of years, they have bred all their own gilts and boars from within, not even any Al. Currently they are using PIC semen to improve the genetics. David Thompson who took over the family run estate at a very young age has always liked pigs and his late father used to keep Wessex sows. At the tender age of 81 he is still as keen as ever and says he just likes pigs. His son Sandy runs the 400-acre arable unit which supplies the cereals for the 170-sow unit.
