Cranstons at Penrith, has one of the finest food halls you could imagine, and a first-class restaurant. Founder Stanley Cranston opened his butcher's shop in 1914, when deliveries were made by horse and cart. Today the company has five shops, employs160 people and has won over 70 awards for its products. Brothers Philip and Roger Cranston who now oversee the business use as much local product as possible and process all their beef, lamb and pork in-house. The company is a member of the Q Guild, a small group of 150 butchers representing the elite of British butchery. Its latest awards have gone to Cranstons Dry Cured Streaky Bacon and Cranstons Dry Cured Bacon.
