M Hyo: the primary cause of profit-limiting respiratory disease in pigs

With five M Hyo vaccines now available to us, the working pig farmer may be finding life somewhat confusing. Veterinary surgeons have to understand the workings of the various vaccines and where one scores over another. But all a farmer really needsto know is the devastating effect mycoplasma hyopneumoniae has on his herd in terms of lower growth rates, higherfeed conversion and poorer health. There is still discussion in various circles as to whether a one shot or two-shot vaccination programme isthe best way forward. I would not attempt to advise; over the years I have attended the launches of all the present M Hyo vaccines, and each is the result of solid research and carries persuasive arguments.
