This is a Progress report. This project has been on hold for a number of several years to allow the new rules to settle between a number of proposed rule variations the magnitude of which would have had a significant effect (up to 50%) on these comparisons. While such gyrations are not unusual in committee work they have had a dramatic impact on the timeline of this effort. Therefore the Committee felt it better to publish the findings as of this writing rather than wait for a final resolution of all details. Nevertheless because the basic structure and philosophy of the proposed rules have remained essentially intact the reader should benefit from the findings, methods and observations found in this report. The rules as presented herein represent the status of the proposed rules as of 2002. Interestingly, bolt load calculations produced by the proposed rules as of this time frame produce numerical results that are essentially the same as those proposed in 1995 except in the case of bolt loads at significant elevated temperatures. A "Graphical method" for calculating a design gasket stress is appended to this report. The method was developed by Bob Schneider as a part of this project. Please see Appendix 2.
