It is a well-known fact that the performance and life of a structure is often affected by the performance and life of the weldment. Even with stainless steel which itself shows excellent corrosion resistance, deterioration in corrosion resistance at the weldment becomes a vital factor for determining the life of a structure or a product, depending upon its service environment. Particularly serious problems for the stainless steel weldment include localised corrosion such as pitting corrosion, intercrystalline corrosion and crevice corrosion, as well as stress corrosion cracking (SCC). This report will deal with each kind of stainless steel, examining its metallurgical factors in relation to the deterioration of corrosion resistance at the weldment and give an outline of the deterioration caused by those factors.
