Laser transmission welding, which allows to weld parts with different absorption properties, has gained significance among the established thermoplastics welding processes. This is particularly true for its new variant called quasi-simultaneous welding. However, so far no basic systematic investigations concerning the application of quasi-simultaneous welding in industrial production had been made. This document gives the very first results obtained using the high performance plastic Peek, with different carbon black contents. Welding was performed with a solid-state YAG laser. The welding parameters (intensity of the laser radiation, scanning velocity, joining displacement and joining pressure) were varied and their influence on the quality of the welding joint was recorded and evaluated. The properties of the absorbent component were of particular interest in terms of the achievable welding strength. Furthermore, pre-drying of the hydrophilic material Peek was carried out and the increase in weld strength measured.
