Regardless of the economic state of the nation, and the engineering industry in particular, the fact remains that efficient manufacturing production implies the application of appropriate technology. For an automobile manufacturer, this could be a multi-million pound computer-controlled robotic spot welding line, but for a modest fabricating concern making small agricultural implements, the introduction of a simple fixturing system might, in relative terms, make similarly spectacular improvements to productivity and profitability. The natural temptation is for trade exhibitions to highlight sophisticated, complex - and usually costly - state-of-the-art technology, whilst taking for granted the simpler products which, for a great many fabricators, are much more relevant. A distinguishing factor of the first immensely successful Welding & Metal Fabrication held in April 1994 was the breadth of the range of products on show, and the fact that the whole spectrum of fabrication technology was available. This September the formula is set to be repeated, and fabrication in its widest sense - as distinct from welding alone - will be the theme of the show. In the preview which follows, we describe a selection of the exhibits available as we go to press which, hopefully, will provide visitors with a foretaste of the event.
