This paper discusses some control measures to prevent the horizontal transmission of Salmonella sp. between pullets in poultry farms. The author recommends acidifying the drinking water for pullets during the first week to 10 days of a broiler or turkey flock and the last 24 h during feed withdrawal. Water acidification to a pH of 3.5 or less will selectively promote gut colonization with good healthy bacteria while suppressing Salmonella sp. in the crop. Acidifying litter treatments can also help control the number of Salmonella sp. in the litter. A low pH and high sodium environment in the litter will favour the growth of lactic acid producing bacteria.
