Poultry plant wastewater is a combination of organic and inorganic compounds dissolved or suspended in water, and wastewater treatment plants use physical, chemical and biological processes to remove these dissolved and suspended substances. Eutrophication, or nutrient enrichment, of many rivers, lakes and streams in this country has led to a tightening of effluent limits for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants, and this has forced many poultry plants to change or upgrade their wastewater treatment systems.
