A University of Georgia study indicates that process water should be reused in upstream, direct-product-contact applications only after it has been treated to eliminate all pathogens. Following full implementation of the USDA's Zero Tolerance rule, many poultry processors found that their water usage had increased significantly. This led the industry to begin searching for effective ways to reduce total water consumption. One possible solution that began receiving increased attention involved waterreuse.
