Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, was the scene of Peter's early life. His father was an engineer at a nearby steelworks and his mother a district nurse. For Peter, grammar school was followed by the University of Bath as a student in the Department ofApplied Biology. Here he met Dr Les Jacobs, the chief architect of the once -- famous and well-patronised biennial 'Bath Mushroom Courses'. Several of Peter's fellow students are now well-known in mushroom growing circles. Mushrooms, however, were not for Peter, not immediately anyway. His first job was with Bayer Agricultural Chemicals in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Here he was involved in the work of their agricultural experimental farm.
