MGA conference 2001: what makes a good, and consistently good, compost?

Three presentations from the Chester 2001 Conference gave the contrasting view-points of a user of compost, producer of compost and an adviser to the industry. We have reproduced three Conference lectures on this common theme. During my time in theindustry I have seen and been part of many changes. I feel we are all members of a more "Global" industry. We can no longer operate in isolation from each other. We interact when we market together, when vehicles pass between farms and when compost lorries visit several farms up and down the country. We are inter-related, some more than others. What affects one may eventually affect us all. The financial reward for mushroom growing today is small and the tolerance for failure of any part of the processis none existent. I have been asked, as a phase III-user to say what I think makes a good compost and a consistently good compost. A good compost is best described as my primary or basic need. A consistently good compost is best described by what I shallterm as my secondary need.
