Management at Sandy Point State Forest Benefits Recreation Wildlife and Research

Sandy Point State Forest in King William County was once the corporate hunting grounds by invitation only for Chesapeake Corporation. It was intensively managed for quail in the 1980s and 1990s, which included thinning mature pine stands to a low density; burning in the under-story; maintaining open, early-successional vegetation, and keeping roads day lighted.This was the general state of the forest when it was acquired by the Virginia Department of Forestry in 2002. Since then, Sandy Point State Forest has become a favorite recreational destination for hunters as well as horseback riders, boaters, hikers and bicycle enthusiasts. With 15 miles of roads that are off limits to unauthorized vehicle traffic, many people enjoy the peace and solitude that the front gate affords them.
