Potential Impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on Forest Landowners in Virginia

The effect of recent hurricanes in the Gulf Coast Region on demand for forest products from Virginia and the resulting effect on stumpage prices over the next few years will be derived fromtwo primary factors. First is the increased level of demand for lumber, plywood, and oriented-strand board (OSB) to rebuild the houses and businesses damaged or destroyed. Second is the amount of timber damaged or destroyed by the recent hurricanes which will reduce the supply of timber over the next few years.
