The sink function of rewetted base-rich fen sites is affected by flow pathways. Using the results of hydrochemistry and geohydraulic modelling at three rewetted sites in the northeastern German Laender of Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, the flow patterns were analysed and sustainable water management practises derived: 1) If water is supplied by ditch-blocking and partial flooding during the winter time water and chemical flow is directed into the rewetted area and upwards to the surface. 2) If water is distributed as flow over the surface without geohydraulic connection to the surrounding area. 3) If water is distributed by irrigation devices over the surface with downwards directed water movement and a geohydraulic connection to the surrounding area leaching and filter function may occur in vertical direction.
