Close to the existing navigation lock in Uelzen at the Elbe-Lateral-Canal (ELC) a new lock with usable length of 190 m and a width of 12,50 m is under construction. For its design former experience in lock building were available, but it was also necessary to comply some special conditions. That led to some new aspects for the lock design. A very rigid construction was chosen for the new lock, realised by integrating four saving basin into the lock system, each basin on top of the other. New steel-constructions and power-systems will go into action. Also the comprehensive hydraulic-system is not jet proven in the intended arrangement. Because of that the system was examined before in extensive hydraulic tests. Today's regulations in technology, for the public safety and order and for the design of work stations fix high standards on the tower and the equipping of the lock. The new construction requires a watertight deep pit with retaining structures and diaphragm walls and a watertight jet grouting bottom specially anchored in the ground.
