Distribution and conservation of nearctic migratory birds of the order Charadriiformes(families Charadriidae and Scolopacidae) in Brazil

Despite the research efforts of recent years, many aspects of the migration of Neartic Charadriidae and Scolopacidae in Brazil remain unknown. Most studies at a local or regional level show the need for a synthesis of information at a spatial scale that is appropriate to facilitate the detection of major movement patterns in Brazil as a whole. Therefore this thesis aimed to identify the general distribution patterns and migra-tions of those species of Charadriidae and Scolopacidae that breed in the northern hemisphere and use Brazil during the non-breeding season in order to develop strategies for their conservation. More specifically the objectives were (1) to characterize the birds' main migratory routes; (2) to identify critical areas for their conservation, using established criteria; (3) to assess the current state of conservation of critical areas; (4) to assess whether critical Neartic shorebird areas were designated as priority areas for biodiversity conservation in Brazil; arid (5) to use Ramsar Convention and Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network criteria to identify the most important areas for these species.
