Daring to be different: Peter Noad evaluates the Bora, the booted alternative to the Golf and considers it a much better all-rounder, especially in powerful and economical TDI form
THE RELATIVE merits of the hatchback versus the saloon with a boot have now been debated for 30 years or more. The practical considerations are simple. If you want to use the car as a two-seater van to transport bulky items such as furniture, lengths of timber, lawn mowers, bicycles etc then you need a hatchback. On the other hand, if you want to accommodate passengers in the back, or you don't want to mess around folding down the back seat, then the saloon gives you more luggage space as well as greater safety and security for your load.
