An expensive option, but the new top-of-the-range Caravelle is not only a pleasure to drive, but also combines comfort and practicality while providing all mod-cons for the business user... NEARLY SIXTY-SIX THOUSAND pounds is a lot of money to pay for a VW van. Clearly, though, this is no ordinary van, but the very top of the T5 Caravelle line-up. With a level of comfort and equipment comparable with some limousines, but with considerably greater everyday ability, this vehicle is virtually a VIP's mobile office, combining panache with practicality. The Caravelle Business was announced for the UK range in early June 2012 and we took delivery of one of the first examples available to the press fleet, for our road test in mid-August. Apart from being finished in special pearl effect black paintwork, an optional extra costing ￡595, every other feature of this vehicle was a standard item, which accounts for its considerable on-the-road price of ￡65,985 (inc VAT). The 7-seater T5 Caravelle on which it is based is already the most luxurious of the people-carrying versions of the VW commercial range, and is available with either short or long wheelbases and two trim levels, SE and Executive. It is powered by a choice of 4-cylinder, 2.0-litre, common-rail TDI engines- 140 PS single turbo or a twin-turbo 180 PS BiTDI version, with either 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmission available with both power outputs. There is also a 4MOTION all-wheel drive version with the 180 PS 2.0 BiTDI engine, which can also be specified with the DSG gearbox.
